在沥青混合料中掺入木质素纤维具有多重作用。首先，纤维分散于混合料中，能增强材料的整体性，起加筋作用；其次，纤维能避免沥青和矿粉大量结合形成不均匀胶团，起分散胶团作用；再者，纤维具有吸油效果，不仅能够防止沥青析漏，而且能够因增加沥青用量而提高混合料的耐久性。在夏季，纤维还能吸收流动沥青，起到防止泛油和提高混合料高温稳定性能的作用。
